About Corten:
Corten steel, also known as ‘cor-ten’ or ‘weathering steel’, was originally created in the U.S. during the 1930s. Corten is a group of steel alloys which were developed to remove the need for painting, and naturally form a stable rust-like appearance if left exposed to the weather for several years.
By adding a percentage of copper to raw steel it was found that corrosion resistance improved significantly.
Corten weathering steel resists the corrosion by forming a coating of dark brown oxidation over the metal, which inhibits deeper rust penetration and removes the need for painting and costly rust-prevention maintenance over the years.
The name corten is made up of it’s 2 most important metallurgic features - corrosion resistance and tensile strength.
